Week 9: Recipe Of The Week

Decker’s Dream SunnyD Blend 🌞 | How to Maximize Your Hair Color 💛🩷

Today we’re showing you how to maximize your colors and master the art of the custom "bridge" tone. Last week, we broke down the Color Illusion and how over-mixing harmonious colors creates a brand-new shade instead of "mud." This week, we are putting that theory into practice to create a high-dimension, sunset-inspired masterpiece using some of our more unusual picks.

Most of the time, the rule of thumb is to avoid over-mixing so you don't lose definition. But today? We are intentionally over-mixing a portion of our hair to create a custom transition shade that makes the final braid look seamless, professional, and glowy.

🌀The Recipe:

See the blend here!

✶ Lone Star Yellow (Tinsel or Non Tinsel)

✶ Mob Wife Fruity Pink (Tinsel or Non Tinsel)

The Directions:

✶ The Reserve: Take a small section of each color and set it aside. The amount you take depends on the specific ratio you want for your blend - this is all about personal preference!

✶ The Over-Mix: Take the remaining hair and blend it together completely until the individual pink and yellow strands disappear. This creates your new custom SunnyD orange ;)

✶ The Final Fusion: Now, mix your original Lone Star Yellow, your Mob Wife Fruity Pink, and your brand-new SunnyD color together.

The "Why": The Power of a Bridge Color

Why go through the extra step of mixing a third color? It’s all about gradient transitions.

When you mix Lone Star Yellow and Mob Wife Fruity Pink, you are working with warm, analogous colors. Because they sit near each other on the color wheel, they don't fight; they collaborate. By "over-mixing" them into a SunnyD orange, you’ve created a mid-tone that acts as a bridge.

Instead of a harsh jump from Pink to Yellow, your eye sees a smooth, glowing transition that looks professional and custom-toned. It’s the difference between a simple mix and a high-end color melt. It also helps maximize your colors!

Ways to Customize

This "Sunset" base is incredibly versatile. You can shift the vibe of your SunnyD blend just by tweaking the ratio or the finish:

  • Want it Electric? Use the tinsel versions of both colors.

  • Want it "Fruit Punch"? Keep a larger section of the Mob Wife Fruity Pink aside and only use a tiny bit of Yellow for the over-mix. This will result in a deeper, coral-leaning orange.

  • Want it "Lemon Sorbet"? Lean heavier into the Lone Star Yellow. Your "bridge" color will become a soft, peachy gold that feels light and airy.

  • Want more Contrast? Don't over-mix the SunnyD section quite as much. Leave a little "blur" (our V2 from last week) to keep the texture looking raw and vibrant.

The Takeaway

By creating your own "bridge" color, you’re taking control of the science. You aren't just using the colors out of the bag; you’re creating a custom palette that no one else has.

I used all non-tinsel colors for this creamy, juice-inspired look, but the sky is the limit. Now that you know how to create a third color from two, go forth and maximize your stash!
