Week 15: Breaking the Rules of Color Theory 🧪🌈

You guys know I am the biggest fan of mixing colors to make brand-new shades. We recently dropped our Blends with Benefits Collection, which featured set ombrés specifically designed to blend together for seamless transitions. But what happens when you mix two completely different colors that you don’t think would necessarily make sense together?

Well, @ethanhansen4hair put it to the test first, and I have to say my mind is blown. I didn’t think that combining these two would result in such a magical color, but this experiment has me rethinking what combinations we need to try next! 👀

🌀 The Recipe [See the blend here!]

✶ Not Your Mermaid

✶ Sour Patch Kid

The Directions:

  • The Fusion: Take your sections of Not Your Mermaid and Sour Patch Kid and layer them together completely.

  • The Full Blend: Give this mix plenty of passes. You want the individual fibers to thoroughly integrate so the underlying tones can actually interact.

  • Watch the Shift: Pay close attention to how the colors marry. Instead of turning into a dull brown, the strands blend into a totally unexpected, iridescent finish.

Why This Unexpected Mix Actually Works

On paper, mixing these two shades sounds like a quick path to a muddy disaster. Understanding color theory is usually essential for a clean blend, but in this case, the results can completely surprise you!

Because these specific colors aren't just flat, raw primary pigments, they don't cancel each other out when mixed. Instead, the purple tones and green shades create a gorgeous "oil-slick" effect. They play off one another depending on how the light hits them, creating a smoky, mystical dimension rather than actual mud.

The Takeaway

Sometimes the best discoveries come from throwing the rulebook out the window. Color theory is a fantastic guide, but this experiment proves that you shouldn't be afraid to try combinations that seem totally "wrong" on paper.

Grab your packs, get creative, and let’s see what other magical illusions you can discover!
