Week 17: Master the Material - My Top Tips for Working with Braiding Hair

Whether you are a seasoned pro or just starting to experiment with custom color blending, these are the fundamentals that keep me running smoothly and my blends perfectly clean!

My Top Tips for Working with Braiding Hair

  • Slow down. I would argue that 90% of the problems people encounter when working with braiding hair stem from moving too fast. Pulling, separating, and blending fibers too quickly is exactly how unwanted knots and frizz form. Take your time with every pull.

  • Only work with what you can manage. I typically only work with the equivalent of two packs of hair at a time. Even if I am using 15 different colors in a massive custom recipe, the total volume never exceeds two to three packs. It is always best to work with small amounts to keep the hair fully controlled.

  • Tame the static. If you live in a dry climate and the hair becomes staticky, use a spray bottle with water to dampen it before blending. Controlling the flyaways prevents them from creating unnecessary tangles while you work.

🌀 The Recipe [See the blend here!]

Rush Hour (Red)

Silver Fox (Silver)

Supervillain (Black w/ Silver Tinsel)

Millennial (Rose Gold)

✶ Wine Mom (Burgundy)

The "Why": Volume and Control in Blending

When you attempt to blend too many packs at once, your hands cannot maintain even tension across the entire bundle. The fibers in the center begin to shift at a different rate than the fibers on the outside, leading to internal matting. By keeping yourself limited to a two-pack volume, you ensure that every single strand moves uniformly, resulting in a silky, and perfect mix.

Ways to Customize

This rich, metallic-wine palette offers a gorgeous depth that you can easily pivot depending on your style:

Lean Heavy on the Metal: Increase your portions of Silver Fox and Millennial  while keeping the reds minimal. This turns the blend into an icy, frosted rose-slate look.

Deepen the Shadow: Maximize the Supervillain and Wine Mom to create a dark, moody midnight-burgundy where the silver tinsel acts as a subtle, sharp pin-stripe detail.

Turn up the Heat: Let Rush Hour take the lead role for a high-velocity, fiery crimson look anchored by smoky metallic lowlights.

The Takeaway

Hair design is just as much about mechanics as it is about color theory. By slowing down, managing your bundle volume, and keeping a spray bottle handy, you’ll eliminate the frustration of tangles and keep your focus entirely on the art of the blend.

Take a deep breath, slow down your hands, and see how much easier your layout feels this week!
